As many of you may know, it’s not an easy task to organise and execute a wedding drum circle in India; or anywhere for that matter. It’s a logistically heavy activity.
There’s the step of renting the instruments that you need for the interactive wedding drumming event. Then there’s the task of transporting the drums using commercial transport options from point A to B. There’s a lot of mainak labour involved in packing, loading and unloading the equipment so that there is no damage in transit. There’s travel and stay for the facilitator team and the execution team. So in a nutshell, it’s a handful of coordination replete with a lot of variables on all ends.
We usually get inquiries for live drumming for weddings or wedding drum performances or (our favourite) interactive wedding drumming events. Since we’re going to be drumming with your audience as a whole and since I also perform percussion professionally, I can even add the offering of a live dj + percussion performance at the Sangeet or after party. Clearly, we have a different set of offerings for each of these wedding drum circle requirements and are happy to customize it based on the specific needs of your event.
For this particular drum circle requirement we were all in agreement about the fit and flow of the activity but the major challenge would be to take the drums to the venue and fit it all in the event budget. The venue would be in Giridih, Jharkhand. God knows I’ve travelled across this country with drum circle India but this particular venue was working out to be a challenge.
Very few event organizers are as present and up for the challenge as this one was. I was so happy to be met with openness and a very hands-on type of problem-solving that it made life easier for all of us involved. I shared the option of sourcing junk percussion and locally available percussion instruments from the vicinity and the organiser immediately agreed since it would help give the best possible experience to the group. So long story short; we played with a mix of Punjabi Dhols and used empty paint buckets with some tambourines and wood blocks that I carried from Pune.
Two flights and a two hour road trip later, here’s what the pre wedding drum circle for a small group of enthusiastic (and naughty) people sounded like
