Four On The Floor is a mini-EP launched by Varun Venkit in collaboration with renowned percussionist from L.A, Greg Ellis. The two percussionists met in 2019 and immediately hit it off. Both musicians had a strong connection over the healing and therapeutic potential of music and especially, rhythm. Their organic and analog approach toward music showed in the instruments they played and their thought process in this EP.

At around the end of 2019, Greg was slated to be in Pune for a short while. After unanimously agreeing to create something musical together, they got into Gray Spark Studio with all the drums that Varun and Greg collectively had. You can imagine that there were a lot of drums. The concept was that it would be a percussion-heavy album (Surprise surprise), so each song is a result of either Varun or Greg going into the studio and simply playing what they felt at that point. All that was decided beforehand was a tempo. Thereafter there were no arrangements, musical comments or composition. All of that would happen in the moment. Once one layer had been put down, the other percussionist would go into the room with another instrument and react to the first track. Each musician went back and forth until they decided that the track had enough rhythm layers on it. This went on for two days and culminated into four song ideas. Each idea was then sent to some of Varun’s friends (who played melodic instruments) to react to. This is how these four songs were organically created; as a result of pure musical expression. Every sound you hear has been played live, no samples or loops.

Lyrics for Juggernaut by Varun Venkit & Vasundhara Vee

Stop me not. Break me not. I’m flying. Pace me not
Stop me not. Break me not. I’m flying. Pace me not

I run as fast as my feet carry me
I can’t take this anymore
It’s fear that’s chasing me, but…
Into the winds I soar

Try all you can, you won’t catch me
I’m afraid but I won’t lose
There’s miles before I surrender
Fear or fate, what will I choose?
What will I choose?
There’s miles before I surrender
Fear or fate, what will I choose?

I’m coming loose, my feet get tired
Is this the moment my brain’s rewired?
I’m not the white noise that surrounds me
‘Cus I hold the world and it still astounds me
My voice eludes me, but not to confuse me
It’s just such big magic and I’ve let it choose me. I’ve let it choose me
Don’t stop me. Can’t stop me. Don’t stop me. Can’t stop me. Stop me. Can’t stop me.
Can’t stop me.

Flow is, as the song title suggests, a song which will take you on an internal and at times, very real journey. It is all about being in the here and now and surrendering to a moment fully. Whether you are taking a trip with friends amidst nature, or you’re in a meditative trance, or if you’re just feeling introspective, this song will keep you good company. Considering the sultry groove and vibe of this song, even as Varun was halfway through recording percussion for this song he could not think of anyone else but Bhrigu Sahni to collaborate with.

Lyrics for Flow by Bhrigu Sahni

I feel alive…, the flow is true…
When I’m with you all else seems to be a missing reality…

For you light my soul on fire…
Take me to the music…
Take me to the music where my heart lies…

I feel alive…, the flow is true…
When I’m with you all else seems to be a missing reality…

For you light my soul on fire…
For you light my soul on fire…

Feel the flow…
The breeze in your hair…
No Ego.
I’m about to go home…
Where I belong…
To you.
Where I’m strong…
For you.
Light my soul on fire…

Tara is the Sanskrit word for ‘star’. This song is all about celebrating every moment no matter how big or small. We sometimes come across people who personify this joie de vivre and inadvertently and gracefully remind you to acknowledge the same in your lives. This song is a dedication to the Taras; these very ‘sparks’ in your life that remind you to carpe diem, take yourself less seriously every so often and remind you to smile (or even laugh) when faced with troubles in your life. The song features Pierre Gillet and Thibault Dille; a fiery musical duo from Brussels, Belgium that Varun had the honour of meeting thanks to his brother Rahul Venkit.

The song features Rahul Wadhwani (Mumbai) on piano and Everton Rodrigues (Brussels, Belgium) on upright bass. Just as the musicians have played on this track as if they were dancing through it, this song is an invitation to you to take a deep breath, smile and start with that one dance step (even if it is a tiny snap of your fingers). The song will ensure that you take the second, and the third and the rest will be history. With this song may you experience the great company you can keep yourself, may you experience deep and true connections, may you experience crazy & unconditional love, may you immerse yourself in this dance of life…
