Let’s start today’s blog with a video. This is a drumming team building session I had the good fortune of leading recently. The corporate drum circle comprised 250+ people from all parts of the country.

We drummed with the sales team of Wilo as they congregated in Pune for a 3 day strategy meet. Sales teams have very high stress jobs. As do we all but sales teams, even more so. The constant pressure to sell and meet (many times unrealistic) goals can be very overwhelming. Through the session, we experienced how music as a universal language helped everyone connect, release stress, and engage beyond words. This is an individualistic profile, but yet is one which thrives as a community; as a team. I was very happy to come back and drum with this team once again after many years. The first time was pre Covid around 2017. Of course many people would have changed since the last time we drummed together but there is a certain sense of familiarity with the vision, mission and the values of a company on the second or third visit. This helped me tailor the drum team building activities and other employee engagement activities in a way that would be more apt and relevant to this group, something I’ve seen consistently across drum circle India experiences.

This time we also composed and played a bespoke ‘Wilo- Rhythm’. The idea was to be able to replicate this in all meetings throughout the year. So this would serve as an audio identity for the company. I truly hope that this sticks with them. It is these drum circle events that will stand out because it’s not simply a team building activity for the sake of one, but a meaningful part of their employee engagement initiatives. It is well thought about and planned. The organising team would record, edit and replay the rhythm for them whenever they would meet here on in, creating a memorable call back to this glorious day of 250 drumming together using the best drums for drum circle: Taal Inc djembes turning the experience into one of the most impactful engagement activities for work.

We also explored concepts of ownership, belongingness and identity and most importantly; how these concepts affect us all as a part of the same team. We may not intend it to, but something seemingly insignificant that we do can affect someone else in your team that you may consciously have no idea about, which is exactly why such experiences go beyond fun and become meaningful corporate engagement activities. The drums and team building group drumming sessions help us experience this naturally. That’s when we talk about the learning immediately after the activity so as to strike when the iron is hot. It’s a lovely sight to see the sense of awe and wonder in the faces of the participants as their eyes sparkle in agreement with this group revelation showing once again how music as a universal language brings people together instantly.  Drum and team building drumming workshops are effective in this straightforward way. No secret ingredients. Just plain and simple engagement with an audience that is not inhibited by self-doubt, is fully present and is not affected by one’s own ego.

Drum circles work. They simply do. Just ask team Wilo as they drummed with us again and left with happy and thoughtful smiles. When will Taal Inc. drum with you again? Whatsapp 7767862929 and tell us…

Come. Drum. Be One.
