Akshata Parekh
Counsellor / Expressive Arts Therapy Practitioner
Expressive Arts with Akshata
Akshata Parekh is an Expressive Arts Therapy Practitioner who uses dance/movement, visual art, and rhythm as a therapeutic tool. She has successfully completed The Taal Inc. Facilitator Training Program and an intensive six-day training with Arthur Hull (Village Music Circles, USA). She is presently pursuing her master’s in Clinical Mental Health psychology specialisation in Expressive Arts Therapy from Lesley University (Boston). She is a counsellor and has completed courses in Dance Movement therapy, Visual Art therapy and NLP in India. She is a certified ‘Rhythm-to-recovery’ facilitator (a program using rhythm in therapeutic settings). She is a member of the Creative Movement therapy association of India.
Shweta Shahade

Shweta is a qualified psychologist and a remedial educator with a Masters in Clinical Psychology and Applied Child Psychology from SNDT University, Pune and Nottingham Trent University, UK, respectively. She has worked extensively with children of all age groups as well as adolescents who have learning as well as behavioural disabilities. Her field of expertise also includes counselling and therapy for adults. She is a therapist who can work in Hindi and Marathi and also uses dogs as therapy animals during her sessions.

Wendy Burby holds a Masters in Transcultural Counselling from the University of Malta. She has worked with clients across age groups conducting both individual as well as group and couple sessions. She has specific training in understanding and dealing with diversity within the therapeutic relationship. She has experience working within Schools, Employee Support Teams, Eating Disorders Clinics as well as standard counselling spaces.
Niharica Shah

Niharica is a Psychologist with an M.Sc. in Clinical Psychology (U.K.). She is also a certified Facilitator of Visual Art and Creative Movement Therapies. Niharica works with teens, young adults and adults to address a wide range of mental and emotional distresses. Niharica does not believe there is a standard formula for working with all clients or issues. With a varied toolkit of Verbal and Expressive Art Therapies, she meets each client where they are in their process, with patience and empathy; and walks with them as they figure out where they want to be, and how to get there.

Swati brings storytelling to the counselling space. Based on her training in Art Based Therapy (Pune, London), Counselling Psychology (Mumbai), and Creative Writing (Pune), Swati moulds one and two hour sessions with her clients, exploring the therapeutic value of art. This process does not require you to be a professional painter. All are welcome to enjoy and benefit from this practice.

Tanya has a Masters’ degree in Counselling for Mental Health and Wellness (Applied Psychology) from New York University, NY. She has experience providing individual, family and group counselling to children, adolescents and young adults dealing with a wide range of mental health issues such as trauma, anxiety, stress, depression, self-harm, interpersonal difficulties, body image issues and bullying. She has also worked as a counsellor in a school setting providing support to children and adolescents with special needs as well as academic, social and emotional difficulties. She also uses Cognitive – Behavioural Therapy (CBT) interventions along with visual art, drama and play therapy techniques to help clients reach their goals. Tanya is in the process of completing a graduate diploma in Expressive Arts Therapy from Women’s Christian College in Chennai.

1. How do I prepare for a counseling session?
As someone seeking help for mental health issues, the biggest step to take, is to accept that ‘Being in Therapy’ is NOT a taboo. It is normal and something that is an important of one’s life. With this acceptance, you will be able to openly share your issues or problems and also (along with, able guidance from a professionally trained therapist) find insights to reaching a long solution for the same.

3. What will happen in the first Art Therapy Session?
In the first session with a Mental Health Professional you will talk about yourself, fill a client form and share certain demographic information that are a part of registration and initiation process formalities. Thereafter you will establish, with your therapist, the scope of your therapy relationship.
